Whether it is a simple diamond necklace or a fancy piece designed by a los angeles jewelry designer, you want to take good care of it. One way to keep your jewelry looking beautiful and polished is to clean it on a regular basis.

You, of course, can bring all your jewelry into a professional and have him or her clean them, but this is not always convenient. The good news is you can clean them at home, and you do not even need a fancy cleaner. There are everyday household items that get the job done just as easily.

Baking Soda

Making a paste out of baking soda and water is a good way to remove buildup from silver jewelry. Combine ¼ cup baking soda with 2 tablespoons water. Apply the paste with a damp sponge and rub gently onto jewelry. Rinse off and then buff dry.

If you want to polish your gold jewelry, cover it with a light coating of soda, pour vinegar over and then rinse. This is not a good method for jewelry that contains gems or pearls.

Soda Water

If you have gems, such as gold diamond drop earrings,  you want to brighten up, fill a glass with club soda. Place in your diamonds, emeralds, rubies and emeralds and have them soak for a few hours or even overnight. Take out and rinse. If the diamonds need a little extra love, use a soft-bristled brush to help remove grime around the stones.

Shampoo

Pearls take more of a gentle cleaning procedure, so you can’t just let them soak in a solution. Lay a strand of pearls on a soft cloth. Mix a small amount of gentle shampoo with warm water and dip a small, clean makeup brush into it. Brush over each pearl and then rinse with a damp, clean cloth. Dry the strand flat.

Even though there are at-home methods for cleaning jewelry, it is always a good idea to take them into a professional jeweler once or twice a year. They use a special machine that cleans thoroughly and produces a shiny and new look.
